Mike Medford was selected in the area of Commercial Litigation. Mike has over 29 years of experience litigating a broad range of business and commercial disputes. His practice focuses on complex business litigation involving shareholder and partnership disputes, disputes relating to the purchase and sale of businesses, disputes relating the purchase and sale of goods and services, business and legal malpractice claims, lending disputes, employment disputes, securities law disputes and insurance disputes.
Having more than 35 years of experience representing clients before the North Carolina General Assembly, John McMillan was recognized in the areas of Government Relations as well as Eminent Domain and Condemnation law. John drafted and led the lobbying effort to pass North Carolina's Product Liability Act in 1979 and was the business coalition leader in the efforts to successfully rewrite North Carolina's workers compensation laws in 1993 and to pass tort reform in 1995. He also has significant experience representing landowners in condemnation cases brought by state and local governmental agencies. His representation includes dispute resolution through negotiations, mediations and trials. John currently serves as Vice-President of the North Carolina State Bar and as President of the University of North Carolina School of Law Alumni Association.
Charles Fulton, Barry D. Mann and Samuel “Ted” Oliver, Jr. were all selected as Best Lawyers in the area real estate. As one of the first lawyers in North Carolina to specialize in the area of real estate, Charles Fulton has a wealth of experience to draw upon in retail, office and residential matters and is celebrated for his pro bono work. Barry Mann represents commercial real estate developers and investors through the phases of the development of a variety of commercial properties—from land acquisition and financing to construction, development, leasing and management of the property, and often, to sale of the project. Ted Oliver’s practice is centered on commercial real estate acquisitions and real estate finance. He represents public and private real estate clients in land acquisitions entity formation, real estate finance, sales and purchases of developed and undeveloped properties, and general business and development issues.
Gerald Thornton was recognized by Best Lawyers in the area of Tax Law. He has had extensive experience in helping individuals preserve their assets through tax and estate planning. He is skilled at setting up trusts, family limited liability companies and partnerships, insurance trusts, and other tax planning vehicles to accomplish family financial planning goals and business succession plans. He has helped businesses of all sizes grow through strategic tax planning, employee benefit planning, and a wide variety of merger and acquisition transactions. He attends meetings of boards of directors to advise them on sensitive corporate and tax matters as well as transaction structure, fiduciary duties, and transaction negotiations. Gerald served as an attorney for the Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service from 1967-1970.
